ESP-4070 -- CHARLES GAYLE -- LOOK UP -- RECORDED LIVE IN 1994

This was Gayle's first tour of the U.S. West Coast and he was admittedly inspired by the reception he received." The opening anguished cry of Gayle's "Alpha" clearly signals the sound of freedom that ignites this religiously inspired free improvisation that at times recalls the intensity of Coltrane's Meditations.

Fueled by Wimberly's pounding percussive attack, Gayle launches into a tour de force outing that is fervent and cathartic. Bisio's bowed bass interlude presages a second extended Gayle creation, on this one his cavernous tone, wide vibrato and marching rhythm more clearly identifying him as a disciple of Albert Ayler, hence the piece's title. Introspective solo showcases for Bisio, then Wimberly introduce the track "I Remember Eric Dolphy" that features Gayle on bass clarinet.

The title "In The Name Of The Father, Son & Holy Ghost, " the composer explains, is a biblical reference and has nothing to do with the similarly named Trane piece from the Meditations album.

The concluding title, the self explanatory "The Book Of Revelation," once again features Gayle on a biblically inspired piece that reveals his roots in the tradition of the Christian church.
