EVAN STONE- Musician

“Some people think, I on the other hand, think you shouldn’t!”

Perhaps stated in jest, this philosophy serves most musicians well.

For Evan Stone, Drummer/Bandleader of the Translucent Ham Sandwich Band, this philosophy serves him extremely well.

“When you are improvising for an hour and a half straight, there is no time to think.
You must get into a headspace that doesn’t allow for normal thoughts to enter.”

Speaking of normal, it is exactly what the Translucent Ham Sandwich Band is not.

In it, you will find a stellar cast of world class improvisers, musicians, dancers, jugglers, magicians and artists of all kinds… even a print model as the proverbial ‘cherry on top’.
What kind of a musical statement is THSB trying to make, one might ask?

Stone would have you believe that the very meaning of it all is simply the reflection of the world as he sees it. “A vast open space ripened with pure creative energy, yet diluted with chaos and manipulation.”

“Creation, Negotiation and Maintenance seem to be the major players in our daily lives and they weave their way into my art as naturally they should.”

To better understand the mind behind the mastermind, perhaps we should take a look into his past…
Stone originally took up the trumpet and choir as a third grader in the small town of Bayport Long Island, New York. By the time he was 12, he took to banging on cardboard boxes, and after receiving his first drum kit, he joined a rock band and was playing professionally in clubs at the age of 13.
After moving to California at the age of 16, Evan studied under Master Drummer, Roy Burns (Benny Goodman, Woody Herman) for 5 years and continued his studies under such accomplished drummers such as: Peter Erskine, Jeff Hamilton, Vinnie Colaiuta,
Tom Brechtlein, Joel Taylor, Joey Heredia, Chuck Morris, Richie Morales, Moyes Lucas,
Chad Wackerman, Dave Karasony, and Fred Weng.

Stone’s evolving, eclectic style has been shaped by artists such as:
Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Elvin Jones, John Bonham and Stewart Copeland and his early musical influences include:
The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, The Meters, The Police, Chicago, Tower of Power, Elton John, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa.

His travels have brought him around the world to perform his own music as well as having played the traditional role of sideman for some very well known artists in the entertainment industry.
