The word from Eugene Wolf:

I think I heard the Carter Family before I came to earth. I was raised by my grandparents and my grandmother would hum and sing their songs while she was cooking and cleaning. So many beautiful melodies. So much power in the language of those songs. They reach for things we hardly consider these days. Angels. Salvation. Fire. Brimstone. The Carter Family made their mark almost a century ago. With songs even older. Songs that came across the ocean with the people who were trying to find their own salvation. And those songs were already familiar to me when my grandmother was humming them. Was it something about the tune and melody that struck a chord in my young ear and heart?

In Summer 2013 I traveled to Rybinsk with a guitar, a mountain dulcimer and a list of 50 possible songs for performing and recording. For six weeks Mitya and I rehearsed songs for a concert to happen at his estate, Ethno-Kuznya. The concert was a revelation. These old songs told stories that didn't need language. The stories live in the melodies. It was an evening of magic.

I believe that these songs still have stories to tell us in America, too.  We've heard them for over a century and sometimes the stories that they do tell get lost in the notion that they're archaic and museum-worthy but not really relevant today.  Well, thanks in part to A. P. Carter, they have survived to this day and are waiting to be mined for new and important meaning. Mitya is a consummate musician whose gifts include making arrangements for folk music that lift them out of the past and give our modern ears and hearts access to worlds we didn't know existed. The melodies and messages of these songs sound fresh and vital in a world that is speeding toward chaos. Music touches us like nothing else.
