Raoul Pugno : Esquisse - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 06, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
The French composer and pianist Raoul Pugno (1852-1914) trained at the Paris Conservatoire and later taught there himself,as well as developing a major career as a concert pianist (one of the first significant recording artists) - famed for his Mozart interpretations. He also found time to composer in many genres, and the works of his that I have seen (and I hope to record more) are lightly scored, rather in the restrained manner of the late chamber works of his friend Saint-Saens. The literal translation of the title of this short piece is 'Piece to decipher', and I imagine that it may have been written for some sort of quick study test. Published in 1910, the subtle harmonies of this sketch show that Pugno was well abreast of current musical trends. To read more about Pugno, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raoul_Pugno
