Alain Bourgeois - Drums

This hard hitting original by saxophonist Al McLean features blistering solos all around. Alto saxophonist Erik Hove follows McLean's lead with a sharp, thrilling feature, and the pace is matched by pianist Paul Shrofel and drummer Alain Borgeois' solos.

This quintet codifies McLean's unruly, thrilling style, focusing the band into a performance that is both extreme and liberating. Each solo contains a 'gotcha' moment - some cataclysmic threshold that the band steps over together.

True to the Jazz, Period. series, Erik Hove plays an exceptional vintage saxophone in this video. The Buescher alto is the last and most modern of the 1920's True Tones, and features a number of features that would usher in the golden age of saxophones. The instrument is finished in ornate gold to boot!

For vintage enthusiasts, it's particularly interesting to hear the acutely contemporary Hove with such an old horn in hand. The instrument surprisingly is agile and effective, even for Hove's particularly fast technique. A testament to the original builders of the 1927 horn, and as well to Al McLean, who carefully rebuilt the instrument.

Special thanks to Gary Trembley at Diese Onze Jazz and Supper Club, that hosted this Jazz, Period. session.
