emcee hype is a writer/rapper from the wilds of pennsylvania. he's also a pianist, drummer and guitarist, an avid reader, amateur filmmaker, slightly-seasoned actor (you can catch hype in the rite aid pharmacy employee training video!) and comic collector (stand-ups). hype is a member of the quietly-acclaimed production team, jersey bound trunk crew and one-half of the hip hop duo, the wine thieves. production for the wine thieves is done by hype's frequent collaborator, confidant, friend, cohort and accomplice, underground super-producer, party.picasso.
emcee hype released his first pair of hip hop demos, known as the tree of life demos, as a fresh-faced grew-up-with-rap kid more than a decade ago. in the early days, hype emceed on two full-length albums for the now-defunct rap crew, watershipdown, co-formed the brix with party.Picasso (until an impending lawsuit forced a name-change) and released an ep called minding the fort, and appeared on a solo ep entitled, apathy.irony.agony.infinity. hype also recorded an album with fellow emcee, jabee and the world-famous dj vadim called, songs for debutantes. the mixtape was released by illroots.com.
hype is also a member of the MTVu woody-award-nominated hip hop production team,jersey bound trunk crew. JBTC's debut album, get down dirty disco, received praise from fans and critics alike. subsequently, the album landed the crew a spot as MTVu's artist of the week and saw their video in rotation on MTV's college station. in addition, JBTC earned guest spots on the EA games/MTV rock band tour. get down dirty disco is currently available for FREE download from The Commune. instrumentals from the album can be heard on the documentary film, hook up culture. the video for "run.live.love," (as seen on TV) was shot and edited by emcee hype and the jersey bound trunk crew production team, along with the MTVu spots and promo bumps. jersey bound trunk crew was subsequently nominated for best new artist for the MTVu woodie awards and momentarily optioned to Epic Records for $1.5 milli.
after narrowly escaping, souls intact and sans a release, hype released two EPs with party.picasso, as the wine thieves: Sex & Co., and Hot Hor D'oeuvres. a third, brand-new EP from the wine thieves is currently in post-production with jbtc co-member, gumshu. the new EP is called, Waiting for Something to Happen. Princeton Record Exchange called the wine thieves, "mad scientist hip-hop experimentalists" with "the power to ignite and explode" (kerri O'malley). music, culture and fashion blog, emcblue.com, called duo, "hip-hop's coolest up-and-coming artists and freestyle artist's biggest threat" (jasmina cuevas). that's a lot to live up to.
during hiatuses and downtime from the wine thieves, hype produced and recorded three more albums: a record made up entirely of samples from the famous disc jockey, mike neff's radio demo, the neff tapes; the ecclectic and sprawling mixtape, bootleg mixtape cdr blues, featuring hype rhyming over music from they might be giants, moxy fruvous, blue oyster cult, cake, and others; and finally, the 21-track blue-grass/blues title-tracked, a man alone. this triptych of records were all produced, recorded and mixed solely by hype, and are markedly low-fi and un-mastered. each of the aforementioned three albums are heavy on wordplay and freestyles, and light on production value. party would call them (not disparagingly) "self-indulgent." none of the three were officially released, altho some tracks from can now be found online.
hype is currently performing, writing and recording new songs, filming and co-directing several music videos with the telescope road team, and generally being actively creative.
