Eli "Paperboy" Reed's father was a music critic who lent his record collection to his son. The younger Reed gravitated toward gospel, soul, blues, and R&B albums and taught himself piano, guitar, and harmonica, busking in Harvard Square to practice his performing skills. After high school, he moved to Missouri, introducing himself to the local music scene by playing frequently at local clubs to launch his career.
