Nellie Mitchell on NBC TV - Video

DESCRIPTION:
In November, 1981, NBC-TV came to Mountain Home and did a story on our own Nellie Mitchell. This was well before the famous 1990 lawsuit that Roy Danuser filed on her behalf. Here's the whole story, from the NY Times archives on January 2, 1999:

Nellie Mitchell, who successfully sued a nationwide tabloid for publishing her photograph with a fictitious article, died on Thursday. She was 103 and lived in Mountain Home.

In 1990, the tabloid, The Sun, printed a headline with Mrs. Mitchell's photograph and an article about a 101-year-old woman who supposedly quit a newspaper route because she was pregnant. Sun representatives said they had used her picture because they thought she was dead.

On Dec. 5, 1991, a jury returned a $1.5 million judgment for Mrs. Mitchell against The Sun. The United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit upheld $850,000 in punitive damages but reduced the award for compensatory damages to $150,000, from $650,000.
