My uncle Vern ran a small farm called Sunnynook most of his life. My older brother and I spent a month every summer at the farm while growing up in Moose Jaw. Another uncle, Bill, often took me for drives through small towns, where we'd hang out at the general store and cafe, hobnob with farmers, listen to talk of crops, seed, weather. Percy Schmeiser is a Saskatchewan seed farmer. Some years ago the corporate seed giant, Monsanto, decided to find out what Percy was made of. Farmer's Lament isn't about Percy, per se, but I dedicate it to him for representing the courage and conviction of farmers who refuse to pervert and pollute our food for the sake of a dollar.
