DESCRIPTION:
Don Gardner (born May 9, 1931) is an American rhythm and blues drummer and vocalist.

Born in Philadelphia, Gardner started out as a professional musician in 1947 while still at school. By 1953 Gardner had formed his own group, the Sonotones, but teamed up with Dee Dee Ford in the early 1960s to have his biggest successes. Their biggest hit was "I Need Your Lovin'," a Top 20 hit in 1962.[1] It is a call-and-response classic in the mold of Ike & Tina Turner. Between 1964 and 1965 the Don Garner Quintet with Dee Dee Ford were based in Sweden where they released three live albums including one fronted by Freda Payne.

Gardner collaborated with other artists in the 1960s and 70s, including recording albums with Baby Washington and Freda Payne. However, the success of "I Need Your Lovin" with Dee Dee Ford, was not repeated although Garner continued to issue records until the mid 70s. Thereafter he has continued to work as a jazz musician to the mid 2010's.

Gardner has been part of the management of the Clef Club of Jazz in Philadelphia, PA since 1985.
