Incorporating brutality, hook, and innovation to revitalize a stagnant genre are Domination Through Impurity (DTI): The two-piece death metal band from Charlotte, North Carolina. Established in 2004, "DTI" have made an impact in metal with their driven work ethic to create inventive and unique compositions. The band, comprised of Joe Payne (guitar, vocals) and Jordan Varela (drums), are relentless in their efforts to show the world what they think death metal should be. This band does everything a metal band should, without making the same mistakes that produce generic, uninspiring acts.
Joe Payne and Jordan Varela began playing together in Lust of Decay in 2003, and then later formed DTI, as a side project, in January 2004. This project allowed both musicians to use their talents in ways they might not be able to apply them in their other bands (Lust of Decay, Lividity, Lecherous Nocture, etc). After several months of searching and countless auditions, no other able musicians were found to fill the gaps in DTI's lineup. Frustrated but not discouraged Joe and Jordan rehearsed for a year straight before deciding it was time to start playing shows. DTI played one show before entering the studio in late 2004 to record their first full-length album under Comatose Music. In February 2005, their debut album, "Essence of Brutality", hit the metal community like a punch in the gut. "Essence of Brutality" is exactly what the name suggests: Pure brutality. With an album under their belt, Domination Through Impurity was quickly becoming common conversation in the world of metal. Live shows, along with added promotion from Joe joining the death metal act, Nile, aided their rapid yet consistent rise in the underground. This was only the beginning.
Along with the band, come their energetic and intense live performances, even with only 2 members. Front man, Joe Payne, provides a razor precide guitar performance while unleashing his unadulterated, demonic fury on the microphone. Meanwhile, Jordan Varela pounds out machine gun-like double bass with his never-ending arsenal of improvisational drum licks. Domination Through Impurity has been described as one of the most technical and brutal units around, as well as the most versatile, seamlessly shifting from precise leads and syncopations, to face ripping chaos, with solid executions. Some critics have even gone as far as to say that DTI is "Brutally and technically superior in the underground".
Domination Through Impurity are currently working on their long awaited release, "Masochist", which is the product of over 4 years of hard work and devotion. Their sophomore effort is set to be released in the spring of 2009. New members are currently being recruited to give DTI's music the justice it needs in a live scenario. For DTI, there is only one goal in mind: to compose creative and innovative music. The maturation of the members as both writers and musicians has been a long, yet rewarding journey. Their journey has only just begun.
