Tom Baker Bio.
Like with many of his contemporaries it was the explosion of the heady acid house movement across London in the late 1980s that was to be the decisive influence over Tom Baker's musical direction. His earlier years growing up had been influenced by his family of Jazz musicians and these new sounds pulsing from urban warehouses shook his musical belief system to the core. With this combination of experiences he was to emerge with a focus for forward thinking, original house and techno and an underlying interest in sonics and dance-floor dynamics.
Tom's production work harnesses this ethos, producing solo or more commonly with Lawrence Mohammed. With so many releases currently filling the shelves of our record shops Toms production aesthetic is specifically of quality over quantity. His occasional releases enjoy a level of anticipation by his peers and consequently his music finds its way into the record boxes of DJs right across the Globe. This healthy attitude towards releasing and distributing his music is continued through to the close selection of record labels Tom has chosen his work to be delivered through. His debut release in 2003 was picked up by Terry Francis and Nathan Coles for their Wiggle imprint and subsequent releases have been signed to Brique Rouge and Wrong Recordings. Not just dance floor tracks, as licensing deals for compilation CDs in the UK and abroad endorse his strive for originality and quality of composition.
First and foremost the DJ, Tom's style was formed at a residency throughout 1991 at the Coliseum Club in London. His ear for strong new music and sense of timing went on to help him win Mixmag magazine's first ever DJ competition, selected from over 1000 entries. By the mid 1990s he was playing guest spots in the legendary main rooms of The Ministry of Sound and Bagleys Film Studios as well as his ever busy schedule playing to the more humble clubs and bars in and around London. In the late 1990s Tom committed to a bi-monthly residency with the Sound Architecture organisation in Holland, and the door to the developing global underground house scene was opened. He soon found himself frequenting the shores of many eastern European Countries, Asia and The Far East, entertaining ever-growing audiences within these emerging scenes. By 2000 this had lead to headline gigs in North and South America as well as continued trips all over Europe.
Back in his home town Tom has recently delighted the crowds at Fabric, The Egg, Cargo and Turnmills. His sets could be described as soulful, deep, driving or funky, but will inspire passion and a rapturous reaction, playing to the party whilst equally striking into the hearts of the chin-strokers.
