Ele é quem dita o ritmo, quem faz a base e os beats dos discos – e, depois, também os riscos e scratches.

Mas o que define, afinal, um bom DJ? A seleção de músicas em uma festa, a pista cheia, as pessoas dançando? A produção de batidas para novas letras, em estúdio ou até ao vivo, para um freestyle? A interpretação pessoal de seu tempo e de outros tempos musicais, entre samples, recortes, montagens e efeitos? Ou ainda a criação, entre muitas influências possíveis, de uma identidade sonora única?

DJ Babão soma tudo isso. Com um estilo próprio, une conhecimento musical, técnica e múltiplas referências, com criatividade e total domínio das novas tecnologias. Por isso, não se espante ao ouvir música brasileira dos anos 70, hip-hop, funk, colagens de filmes e desenhos animados em uma mesma mixagem contagiante na pista.

Apesar de integrar a chamada Nova Escola do rap brasileiro, acumula experiência de velha guarda nas pick-ups e na programação. Estreou na cena hip-hop do Rio de Janeiro, no final dos anos 90, com a dupla Inumanos, ao lado do MC Aori, com quem lançou o respeitado primeiro disco oficial, “Volume 10”. Em 2006, concorreram no Vídeo Music Brasil da MTV e levaram o prêmio Hutuz do melhor clipe de rap com “Polegar Opositor”. Nesta mesma premiação, DJ Babão também foi indicado como Melhor DJ do Ano.

Com sua equipe, a Brutal Crew, criou dois dos mais expressivos eventos da cena hip-hop do país: a “Tradicional Batalha do Real” e a “Liga dos MCs Brutal Cew”, que o levaram à primeira tour nacional, em 2007.

Em 2008, foi o único brasileiro selecionado para o Red Bull Music Academy, prestigiado e exclusivo seminário para músicos, DJs e produtores. A experiência de tocar em Barcelona, sede do evento naquele ano, e, na seqüência, na Alemanha trouxe ao DJ vivência internacional e agregou novos elementos à sua técnica e estilo.

Em 2009, fez seu DJ set em famosas baladas européias, entre elas a “Off The Hook!”, organizada pela crew finlandesa de DJs Plauge, o navio alemão MS Stubnitz na Dinamarca, além dos bares Higgs, Braziliana e o clássico clube Soul Athens na Grécia. O ano trouxe também boas parcerias: participação em uma faixa do aclamado disco “The Spirit of Apolo” do projeto internacional N.A.S.A.; produção da trilha para o vídeo online da Nike, “Já Air”; e discotecagens numa private party para o rapper Ja Rule e na festa da Puma Ocean Race.

Atualmente, DJ Babão é residente oficial da balada Na Beca, no Rio de Janeiro e finaliza a produção do segundo álbum do Inumanos, “Mestres da Noite”. Além disso, trabalha também na composição de um live p.a., para acrescentar uma performance ao vivo ao set com os toca-discos.

2010 começou, em bom estilo, tocando na festa de pré-estréia do espetáculo Quidam, do Cirque Du Soleil, no Rio de Janeiro. E a década promete muito mais.

He’s the one that sets ther rhythm, makes the beats in the records and, afterwards, the cuts and scratches.

But, what does defines a good DJ? The music selection in a party, the crowded dance floor, people dancing? Making beats for new lyrics, in studio or even on live performances, for a freestyle? The personal interpretation of other times through samples, cuts, mixing and effects? Or the creation, in between many possible influences, of an unique musical identity?

DJ Babao brings it all together. With an unique style, he blends musical knowledge, skills and multiple references with creativity and mastering of new technology. That’s why you shouldn’t be surprised when you listen to 70’s Brazilians rarities in between hip hop, funk, movies and cartoon samples in the same exciting mix on the dance floor.

Even thought he is in the “New School” of brazilian hip hop, he gathers some “old timer” experience on the decks and programming. His debut in Rio de Janeiro’s hip hop scene was in the end of the 90’s forming the duo Inumanos, side by side with Mc Aori. After being in a few compilations, they released the respected first official album “Volume X”. In 2007 they were nominee for the brazilian MTV awards for best rap video with “Polegar Opositor”. With this same video, they won the Hutuz (a brazilian hip hop awarding) and Dj Babao was also a nominee for Best Dj of the Year.

With the Brutal Crew, they have created two of the most expressive events on brazilian hip hop scene: a “Tradicional” Batalha do Real and the Liga dos Mc’s Brutal Crew. With those events, he made his first national tour in 2007.

In 2008, Dj Babao was the only brazilian selected for the Red Bull Music Academy, a famous and exclusive seminar for musicians, Dj’s and producers. The experience of playing in Barcelona, where he event was hold, and, afterwards, in Germany made him find a more international point of view to his music; adding new elements to his technique and style.

In 2009 he has performed his Dj set in places like Finland (with Plauge crew @Off the Hook), Denmark (in the Ms Stubnitz ship) and Greece (with kormoranos @ Higgs and solo @Soul Athens and Braziliana). This year alson brought good collaborations. Babao featured in a track of the album “The Spirit of Apolo” by N.A.S.A; he has produced the soundrack for the online Nike video “Já Air” and has played in a private party with the rapper Ja Rule plus was one of the Dj’s at the Puma Ocean Race party.

In 2010, a big style opening, playing at the premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam in Rio. And there’s a lot more to come.
