DESCRIPTION:
The Nyckelharpa is best known from Swedish traditional music but in the 15th Century the instrument was known throughout Europe. Today few people know this wonderful instrument or realize the place it holds in the history of music. It has a unique yet typical sound with an organic power hidden in it's bizarre appearance. Didier François presents the Nyckelharpa purely and acoustically in many other forms than traditional Swedish folk music. He plays a variety of styles: Bach, Ysaye, Spanish buleria as well as jazz themes such as "Crystal Bells" from Charlie Mariano or a bossa nova by A.C Jobim. The richness of the Nyckelharpa's palette of notes and the retrieval of its long forgotten sounds bring to the surface emotions that deep down we all subconsciously recognize and cherish. Didier learned his technique from the great violin player Arthur Grumiaux, adapted it for the nyckelharp and is now teaching all over Europe himself.
In this video, Didier plays a piece that consists of two parts, 'Silence' et 'Boabdic'. 'Silence' is a composition by Didier himself and is followed by 'Boabdic', his interpretation of a Buleria in 12 counts by José Toral.

C'est à partir de la technique du grand violoniste Arthur Grumiaux, que Didier François a pu mettre au point pour la nyckelharpa une méthode basée sur la détente et la légèreté, afin d'aider à l'évolution de cet instrument : cette technique de jeu permet ainsi d'élargir l'interprétation et le champ de son répertoire alors que cet instrument est jusqu'à présent connu surtout dans le monde de la musique traditionnelle suédoise. On apprécie ainsi, par la clarté du chant mêlé à la résonance des cordes sympathiques, la richesse et la profondeur de cet instrument dans Bach, Ysaïe, Satie...comme dans la musique classique ottomane revisitée par Didier François. Celui-ci enseigne cette technique en Allemagne, en Suède et en Italie.
Dans cette vidéo il joue un morceau qui consiste en deux parties liées, 'Silence' et 'Boabdic'. 'Silence', une composition de Didier même, est suivi par 'Boabdic', son interprétation d'une Buléria de José Toral.

Het is dankzij de techniek van de Belgische violist Arthur Grumiaux, dat Didier François een techniek op punt heeft kunnen zetten voor de nyckelharpa die gebaseerd is op ontspanning en vloeiende bewegingen. Deze vernieuwende manier van spelen geeft meer bewegingsvrijheid waardoor de muzikant de kwaliteit van zijn klanken kan verdiepen. Bovendien vergroot dit de mogelijkheden om hedendaagse interpretaties te componeren die het repertoire van dit instrument (dat tot nog toe vooral gekend is door de Zweedse volksmuziek), kunnen verbreden. Men kan nu in het werk van Didier François, dankzij de helderheid van de klank, gemengd met de resonantie van de sympathiesnaren, de rijkheid van de toetsen beluisteren in Bach, Ysaïe, Satie, maar ook in vele van zijn eigen composities waarvan velen gebaseerd op thema's uit het traditionele patrimonium.

In deze video speelt hij een stuk dat uit twee delen bestaat, 'Silence' en 'Boabdic'. Het eerste deel is een compositie van Didier zelf en wordt gevolgd door zijn interpretatie van een Buleria in 12 tijden van José Toral.
