Album Review: Cyndi Lauper, ‘Detour’ By Robert Ballantyne Posted on May 10th, 2016

Talk about a girl just having fun. Over the years, Cyndi Lauper has really done whatever the hell she’s wanted to musically. Since 2003, Lauper has released a collection of jazz standards, an acoustic compilation, a dance-pop album, a blues record, a Broadway musical, and now, a country album.

Lauper continues her eccentric musical adventure by tackling country classics like “Walkin’ After Midnight” and “Hard Candy Christmas”. It sounds like you’d imagine, too: quirky.

While Detour rises far above novelty record status, it’s admittedly jarring when Lauper’s New York accent sneaks in amidst the steel guitar and violins. But kudos to Lauper for not affecting a country twang and staying true to her musical identity — and besides, there’s authentic twang to be found from her many duet partners, including Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Jewel and Emmylou Harris.

Overall, Detour is a fun, capable experiment, but nonetheless, is probably best appreciated by Lauper’s loyal fan base.
