Jeff had been worrying over his daughter Melissa who was, at the time, traveling alone in Brazil. Melissa went to Brazil for Carnival in February 2012, on her own, staying 10 days at a youth hostel. Was it mentioned that she went all by herself? While State Department sources seemed to characterize American tourists there as "prey," Melissa embraced the culture and the experience. She went to learn Portuguese, dance all night, and have an adventure of a lifetime. By her report and based on the photographs that accompanied her return home, all goals were achieved. Her dad, of course, made the song about him and wrote it from the perspective of the provincial xenophobe who doesn't take such chances nor travel outside of the neighborhood unless under duress.
