"Dead To Sin, Alive In Him" by Joel Bickford (original) - Video

DESCRIPTION:
New song! I've been listening to a lot of The Civil Wars/Mumford & Sons/Sojourn lately. I think that had a big influence on this song for me. Definitely a rough sketch of what's in my head for it, but I hope you enjoy and are blessed by it!

Just a little notation about the song:

This is merely a confession of sin for me. My sinful desires pale in comparison to the love Christ offers to me every day. Somehow, I still choose to turn away from Him... at some point... over something... EVERY day. Some may say that that is just part of the "human condition"(sin is inevitable), which I partly agree on. Lately though, the grace of God has been convicting me to abuse it less. This amazing thing happens when we sin... GOD DOESN'T KILL US! After all, the wages of sin is DEATH! I think we, more often than not, we dull that down, make it seem like "Whoa, okay God was clearly just a little pissed when He put that in the word", but it's so true. We all DESERVE death. Jesus Christ, He's the savior because He saves us from that due penalty. He came to earth (fully God, fully man) as a substitute for the price we should have paid. So, for those who are in Christ, when we sin, God looks upon Jesus and sees that our sin has already been paid for. God looks on us like He looks on CHRIST JESUS! That's insane to me.

So rather than abusing the privilege of grace, I choose to see my sin as the very iniquity that Christ had to bear on His cross. For me, the weight of my choices is much heavier with that picture. My sin held Him there, and He loved me so much to endure the pain I knowingly was inflicting upon Him. Christ cross compels me not just to "not sin", but to do everything within my power to praise Him for the price He paid. Grace is a wonderful thing, and it never runs out, and it's never withheld, but I believe it should also be held in high regard and not used merely because we know that it's always available.

Perhaps Romans 6 says it best (the full inspiration for this song):

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Dead To Sin, Alive In Him-

Oh my flesh has failed me once again,

On my knees, to you Lord, I bend,

Only You can satisfy my soul,

In my heart would You make your home

All the times I've tried before and failed,

I can see it now, that those were the nails,

That held you there upon your cross,

Lord, You died to pay my cost

Dead to sin, alive in Him

Have mercy on me, Oh my God,

Blot out my sin and make me clean again,

Against You I've committed all these things,

A contrite heart Your grace ever brings

You gave Your life to purchase mine,

Now in You this love I find,

Grace amazing takes me home,

To the arms of the one I love
