Many have agreed that those moments in April 1917 at the Battle of Vimy Ridge is truly when Canada became a nation on the world stage, and this song is meant to commemorate that event. There is a dearth of Canadian martial or patriotic music but this seminal event in which Canada suffered over 10,000 casualties on Easter weekend while fighting for the first time in its history as a combined army of four divisions under Canadian leadership seemed to be an appropriate event to celebrate.
As an aside the glorious monument at Vimy has been called "the most beautiful war monument in the world" and is well worth a visit by anyone interested in World War One history, but especially by Canadians.
