what folks are saying:

"Danny Massure "What It Is" - Instrumental funk that could be the soundtrack to an Elmore Leonard novel or Jackie Brown Pt. 2."

-CJAM 91.5 Windsor / Detroit Radio

"It's been a busy year for Seattle DJ/producer Danny Massure who dazzled us with his debut "What It Is". The good news is that he's back, with some of the best tracks from that CD - remixed by some of the phatest boys in the business. His blend of rare groove, funk and dance cannot be faulted. He has some killer tunes in his bag and the good news is that the all-star team of remixers have given their all.

The South City Allstars version of "Corkscrew", which opens the album just rocks. Everyone should own it. It's as simple as that. It's a quality tune and the Allstars have really done the original track justice and cranked everything up.

One of the real highlights from Danny's debut CD was "Mama Didn't Lie" and "What It Ain't" has not one, but two versions of that kicking track. I personally preferred the Rephrase remix, but I'm sure some of you will prefer the other by Quasamodo.

All the remixes accentuate the acid jazz and deep funk grooves by building on them, definitely making "What It Ain't" one of the must listen releases of the year. If you don't believe me, check out the Valique remix of "Hotchacha" - which as we say in England, is the mutt's nuts. You could play this tune a million times and never grow tired of it.

Normally, remix albums tend to ruin the original material, but "What It Ain't" has taken some truly great source material and sprinkled some serious magic over it.

"Danny Massure is a true musician: DJ, producer, songwriter, drummer, and a couple other things, he certainly knows how to make some good music. This is shown well on his new album What it is. Similar in nature to the of Mr. Scruff, Massure is at the forefront of the Acid/Jazz/Funk movement, doing it all from Seattle, Washington. There are no samples on his new release, either.this cat is old school, doing everything instrumental and ringin' beautiful tones. Check out "Rock the Afro" below to find out."

"Danny Massure is really active a musician. Not only is he a drummer, he’s also a creative author who has created an excellent creative community around himself. That was the Ticklejunk Allstars, and this is, after the previous one from last summer, their second studio album. It is the name that had changed, however, the contributors remained the same - there’re even more of them at times. It is still the blessed producing work of Danny that places the production to be entire whole, and we also can enjoy the wicked sound due to that. The content is funk again; the solutions are different. By each song. Those ones, who like to name those emotions and influences formed into shaped musical landscapes they listen to, will say, besides one disco, there are jazz, house, breaks and hip-hop tracks on this album. It shouldn’t be surprising, as the colorful musician crew’s sampling free play, solely recorded on instruments, gets on with anything, and has everything sounded truly and clean through all over the the 12 songs of the disc. If the audience of the good old beat generation still lived an active musical life then this album would definitely be sold out in no time."

"Love the new CD; as far as just listening pleasure I love Sweet Miss Rae; the keys remind me of some old Traffic vs. Doors and then the horns with the nice precussion --love it.

Playing out; probably my favorite is: Corkscrew--seems to get the dance floor going with little bit of latin flair--reminds me a bit like Mo'Horizons- very nice."

-J Mack; Forquarters Collective, Baltimore/ Washington DC

"What do you get when you take Will Holland out of the UK and smack him with a West Coast 2x4? Well, I guess you get a pissed off Will Holland, but metaphorically speaking you might get an oblique similarity to Danny Massure's persona. Distinctly funk-da-fied, Massure blends top-notch percussive grooves with horns, some well placed vocals and a whole lot o' rhythm."

-Toneschool.com

"Making a decent acid jazz/funk track is one thing, making a whole album of the stuff is quite the other. Many acts over the years have tried and failed to create the perfect party album. In order to get it right you need plenty of big tunes, really big tunes. Danny Massure's eponymous release on Tickle Junk has some massive tunes.

Both "Rewind" and "Hotchacha" have already been released as singles and frankly, no self respecting DJ should be without these two beauties. The Valique remix of "Hotchaha" is also included in here too and is essential listening.

The Seattle-based DJ, programmer and all-round mastermind has some equally powerful grooves buried on this CD. "Mama Didn't Lie" could be the biggest song on this release. It's damn funky and as catchy as hell. "Rock The Afro" is a serious contender for the dance hall killer track of the year and is so funky, it hurts.

But watch out for some of the slower, more Latinesque tracks. Songs like "Sunbreak" and "Four Wheel Slide" have a more soulful vibe. There's also time for some serious Hammond with "Sweet Miss Rae" recreating the glory days of JTQ and the Brand New Heavies.

If you are serious about funky, jazzy grooves, Danny Massure's work has to be on your wishlist."

".its so amazing to listen this tracks. Both cd are one of the best i got but my personal favourite is your cd "Danny Massure" and over there is are the tracks "mama didnt lie, rewind, hotchacha (original), roch the afro and soledad (Ben Dean remix)" are the best for me but the others are also good.

Big big respect danny. You are one of the top producers of this style.

Hope all is well and wish you all luck for you releases.

Best

"I admire and I'm inspired by a lot of U.S. acts like All Good Funk Alliance, Fort Knox Five, Danny Massure, Thievery Corporation, Nickodemus, etc."

-Rephrase

“Mama didn’t lie” gets it’s James Brown on and is our pick of the bunch, the 4/4 groove and subtle percussion propel the track along nicely. This track is a great crossover jam between a house set and break set. “Hotchacha” is a close second, we like the way it hits that spy groove with a nice bit of flair, sounding like early Ursula 1000 material but with a bit more jazzy undertones. Very addictive. Overall we really like the depth of the horns and layered percussion on all the tracks, Danny go on with your bad self."

"Rarely are funk outfits as outlandishly eclectic as The Ticklejunk Allstars, but these dudes produce jams that make the rounds through just about every dance genre known to man. Mixing breakbeats, housey grooves, and lounge-friendly guitar lines, Ticklejunk is on the path to redeeming Rick James." - XLR8R Magazine
