Whether it be New York in the late 70's, London in '89 or Berlin in the mid-00's, there have been so many cities that have enjoyed dance music's spotlight over the years. Sounds of the City is a brand new mix series from Ministry's specialist division that aims to provide a vivid snapshot of the music, clubs and DJs that defined the golden eras of their cities. This first release focuses on the Parisian underground house scene from the mid-90's to early 00's with the hugely influential Dan Ghenacia at the helm.

With 20 years of experience DJing across the globe, as well as being one of the longest-running Circoloco residents at DC10 and a label boss (currently focusing on his new Apollonia imprint), it's fair to say that Dan Ghenacia knows what he's doing. Having mentored artists such as Dyed Soundorom and Shonky in recent years, Dan's now regarded as one of the stars of the scene, but with Sound of the City we go back to a time when he was just beginning to make a name for himself through his legendary after-hours residency at The Batofar.

"The 90's was when French producers took their first steps in the world of dance music, we were one of the last countries to be touched by House and Techno." Explains Dan. "When I was approached by Ministry to record a 'French Touch 1.0' mix compilation, I had to explain to them that I was surely an actor on the Paris scene, but my sound was precisely a reaction to the French Touch sound!"

"I was unsure about doing the mix at first but when I was given free reign to do it exactly how I wanted to, including not using any computers, I just had to do it. I've been given the chance to demonstrate the more confidential sound I liked in the 90's, relegated at this time to the after hours -- because French Touch was spinning in every damn club! Nowadays these are the sounds and tempo's you'll hear on the main floors right across the globe!"

"Naturally we focused on after-parties and 'Kwality' @ Batofar was our first playground -- a club where we really experimented and pushed the boundaries with sounds, and as a result a loyal network of dancers and DJ's formed around us. It was also around this time that I started working with Circoloco @ DC10 in Ibiza -- taking our sound even further -- and I quickly felt the need to launch my own label that specialized in our new deep, sexy and trippy sound!"

"Freak n'Chic was born and lived its life, until I had to compromise, which led to a financial fight and eventually the need to sadly shut down our operations. But the dream is still very much alive and myself, Dyed and Shonky are currently setting up 'Apollonia' -- a brand new label!"

"With this compilation, I stayed absolutely true to the time and sound, joining together tracks from San Francisco, New York, the UK and some great tracks from my French peeps I used to hang out with. To name but a few, my good friends Ivan Smagghe, who inspired all of us a lot, Didier Sinclair, who introduced us all to Radio FG, and Jef K, who was influential in keeping the connection with the U.S west coast with his labels Fast Forward and Silver Network."

"Now 10 years later I feel like we've all climbed mountains, but also managed to keep the highest point far away enough for many more adventures... Now, where's the after party?!"

And with that Mr Ghenacia has spoken; now it's time for you to listen.
