The crocus is one of my top five favorite flowers! I love them so much that I have been occasionally known to shed tears when I've seen them in the wild- or even just in someone's garden. Every year, in this part of the world, after the heather blooms, either the crocuses or the snowdrops bloom next. It's delightful discovering which it will be! In my home town, however, usually, the crocuses are the first bulbs to sprout. I consider them to be a winter flower, often arriving in late January- so lovely, indeed! Everything about them is pleasing: their shape, their faint scent, the colors they come in, and the way they pop out of the earth next to dead branches and leaves from the previous year. A crocus, in my mind, is pure magic.

This composition (which is a redux of my previous Crocus Waltz from a little over 3 years ago) was meant to describe the melting of snow and frost, and the true beginning of the green year in a temperate climate. It's the slow, spiraling waltz of a young, shining bud emerging from the near colorless ground. It's a waltz of micros and macros, as we zoom into focus toward that which is simultaneously silent and explosive.
