JOHN COSTELLO - Love Is A Shot in the Dark (2012, orig. 1982) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 03, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
John Costello - synthesizers, electronics, samples, vocals / Geoff Pinckney - production, engineering. Recorded at Alien Six Studio, Sussex, June 29 & 30 2012.

The latest in my Glorious Five-Year Plan 1978-1982 cover versions series of my favourite electronic tracks.

Love Is A Shot in the Dark was originally by another of Liverpool's huge roster of electronic music bands, the sadly overlooked Kan Kan. The brainchild of Patrick Dineen, they released a couple of 12 inch EPs - Changing Trains (1981) and The Informer (1982) plus the 7 inch single Film Noir (1980) and in 1982 also recorded a session for John Peel, from whence this wonderful track originates. The Peel session featured four tracks that were as good as anything on the EPs, and it was a toss-up between this and another gem called Apartment 100 which I'll probably medley with it sometime soon.

I recorded the Peel session on its night of broadcast, April 26 1982, on a crappy AM signal that veered in and out, and later lost the tape. I'm indebted to yt user Vibracobra 23 for uploading decent quality audio files of the session tracks quite recently - I was overjoyed to hear them again after all this time.

In 2007 Patrick Dineen issued a cd-r, The Unreleased Tracks, that included studio versions of LIASITD and Apartment 100. I hope my cover does the original jusice and may reach a few people who become admirers of Patrick's music.
