ITALO DISCO: AN ELECTRONIC, EXOTIC ENCORE

Bologna-based Italian Records Opens Archives to Reveal Glistening, Buzzing Treasures[Scroll to the bottom of this section for the track list.]The following preview/review is by Chris Orr, a San Francisco-based DJ, music writer and producer. Italo Disco is a style of music that seems to be as little understood today as it was in the early to mid '80s when the folks at ZYX Music in Germany coined the term to describe the large amount of electronic dance music that was flooding out of Italy, and other nations. However, if there still is bewilderment about the genre, well contradictorily, this compilation, Confuzed Disco, should set us straight on a few of the sterling releases that originated in Italy during those halcyon days before house, techno, and everything else.

Tracks such as Gaz Nevada's "I.C. Love Affair," Funky Family's "Funky Is On" and N.O.I.A.'s "True Love" were no doubt heard in the clubs of the Italian coastal resort towns of Riccione and Rimini, as well as in the famous club, Tenax, in Florence. However, these tracks and many other Italo gems also winged their way across the Atlantic, ending up in the mixes at Chicago's adventurous WBMX radio station and in the sets of Chicago legend and Music Box resident, Ron Hardy.

These songs -- and they are songs -- provide dance music's missing DNA, that elusive strand of electro funk that connected the last breaths of lush, '70s soul with the birth of the robo-disco known as house. Listen to "I.C. Love Affair" with its smooth, rolling bassline and dizzyingly uplifting choruses and imagine how the kids on the insanely loud and dark dancefloors of Chicago must have felt. Tracks like "True Love," hint strongly at what was to come, and when thrown in the mix with equally euphoric party numbers like Stopp's "I'm Hungry" (on compatriot label Discomagic), obviously provided a fair bit of the inspiration for what came to be known as acid house.

These lost classics, obscure as they may be to many of us, were staples in Chicago for years. Though they were forgotten, discarded in embarrassment with many other lesser euro-disco and high energy numbers, or guarded carefully by competitive DJs, one cannot overlook their importance, their timeless infectiousness or their role in paving the way for the next wave of electronic dancefloor music. The term Italo Disco is bandied around at the moment by trendy, hipster DJs as though it was a flavor of the month, but these tracks prove that the music had substance, vision and most of all, a great sense of fun, and those are rare qualities in anything trendy. Please feel free to enjoy again, or for the first time.Chris Orr

Below is a review that appeared in the March IDJ, UK. ("Confuzed Disco" was released this March in Europe and the UK.)

COMPILATION OF THE MONTH, IDJ Magazine, UK

"Despite its popularity of late, there've been few actual collected works of Italo-Discoonly Spacid's "Theme From Radius" and Gianluca Pandullo's "I-Robots," in fact. So when Italy's Mantra Vibes announced theirs with a series of remix EPs of electronic disco and new wave dancefloor gems from the '80s, it felt like several Christmases coming all at once here at IDJ Towers. Honestly, this double-CD compilation of lost classics (N.O.I.A.'s "True Love," Answering Service's "Call Me Mr. Telephone," and Hi-Fi Bros. "The Line," to name but three) and modern club updates (from everyone from house boys Kiki, Radioslave, Munk and Tomboy to space heads Morgan Geist and Lindstrom & Prins Thomas through to up-and-coming Italians Fabrizio Mammarella and Ajello is like an electro-disco fan's wet dream. "Confuzed Disco" is an utterly essential purchasethe least seeing as you'd have spent several hundred quid tracking most of these beauties down on eBay. There's life in this Italo revival yet."
