Cazimi is the brainchild of Ian Hedley who has been writing and crafting guitar based songs for many years now, but intensely for the last 3 years since he built his own studio. He decided to share the songs with the world and hatched a plan to form Cazimi last year with three old friends: Steve Liddle, Jim McCulloch, and Tony Lindstedt. Timing is everything in life and the right people were available at the right time.
The name Cazimi is an old astrological term meaning ‘to be in the heart of the Sun’. Normally this would be a destructive position, but when aligned at 16 angular minutes of a conjunction with the Sun there is an enhancing and strengthening effect, this is Cazimi. Although sceptical of astrology, they feel the definition is a strong allegory for the band: the correct alignment of people and the resulting creative force. They do not however dismiss the notion that there is an undefined spiritual higher power that channels and directs this creative energy.
The themes for the songs are broadly covered by life and death, love and sorrow, politics, religion and existence. The songs are not standard or hackneyed, they have depth and originality and are not limited by musical fads.
Cazimi are releasing a three song EP called ‘My Sign’ for release in May and will be hosting an EP launch gig at The Independent in Sunderland, late May. The band are constantly writing new songs and have enough material for at least four albums; that will be their main focus as well as gigging as much as they can in 2016. In the last 2 months Cazimi have been played on Nick Roberts, BBC Radio Newcastle and Tom Robinson, BBC radio 6.
