Reel Carignan - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 11, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
I wrote this tribute to Québec's pre-eminent traditional fiddler, the late Jean Carignan, more or less by accident. I was trying to figure out a different tune when I stumbled across this one. I liked it so much that I kept it, and for a few years sang the words associated with the other tune to this melody. Then one day, when I was walking down the street, a new set of words to use with this tune popped into my mind, oddly enough, in French. I stopped in to a coffee place and hastily wrote them down, and then fashioned an English translation that fit the meter and rhymed.
It's played here on a Romero banjo tuned in intervals equivalent to "Sawmill" tuning, but tuned down to the key of E, thus: eBEAB. Recorded live at Montreal's Yellow Door Coffeehouse, 10 October 2014.
