With Apogee Ensemble it is simple to insert your favorite outboard gear on a track that you have already recorded.

If you want to connect a compressor for tracking while using the Ensemble Mic Pre amp, you will instead want to watch this video.

We will use Logic 10 in this tutorial, but the same pretty much applies to any recording software.

In Logic, set an I/O insert on the track you want to use by going to “Inserts, Utility, I/O”

A new Window will appear, here you can set the Output and Input you want to use for your Insert.

Since typically you will have Speakers connected to Outputs 1 and 2, You will want to use any of the other outputs 3 through 10.
For simplicity we chose the same for the input.

Make sure Ensemble’s input is set to line level in the Maestro input page.
Use +4 if you are inserting a piece of gear that has balanced inputs and outputs
Use -10 if your gear has Un-Balanced inputs and outputs
You will also have to choose +4 or -10 on the output page as well.

Using a DB25 cable for Ensemble’s Output, you will connect Output 3 of Ensemble to the Input of the gear you wish to inset.
Keep in Mind that Break out cable 1 is actually output 3 of Ensemble
If you look at the diagram here you will understand why.

Now just connect the output of your outboard gear to Ensemble’s Input.

Once all of the cables are connected click on “Ping” in the I/O plug in Window and Logic will automatically detect and adjust for latency.

And finally when you’re finished mixing and ready to bounce the track, you will have to do a “Realtime” bounce when you have outboard gear inserted.
