Brown Noise - Ten Hours of Low Frequency Ambient Sound - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 13, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Brown Noise is a low-frequency noise similar to White or Pink Noise, however much bassier.
Playback system must be capable of decent bass response. Home stereo with a subwoofer is ideal. Most of the sound is below 100 Hz which is where laptops, phones, and most tiny speakers and ear-buds cannot faithfully reproduce. Brown noise rumbles as though a train is passing by the next valley over or you are riding along in a spaceship in a science fiction movie. Low frequencies are predominant and there is much less high frequencies than its sonic counterparts. Try it to mask other sounds in the environment or as all night sleep audio.
Also called Brownian or Random-Walk Noise, Brown Noise has more energy at lower frequencies than pink noise. It decreases in power by 6 dB per octave (20 dB per decade) and, when heard, has a "damped" or "soft" quality compared to white and pink noise. The sound is a low roar resembling a waterfall or heavy rainfall.
See also Violet Noise and Blue Noise, which is a 6 dB increase per octave which in a showcases the high frequencies of the sound spectrum..
Chances are laptop an phones will not be able to reproduce the predominantly low frequency audio. Listen on a stereo or headphones with good bass response for best results. If you have subwoofers that can handle it, you can have an earthquake in your living room, but be careful not to blow them as subsonic frequencies can damage speakers!
Brown noise is a definition of noise not to be confused with the brown note (for which there are tons of videos).
The creation process involved a DAW (digital audio workstation), ProTools. A audio signal generator was utilized to create noise which is then equalized to represent the audio spectrum responses of brown noise as defined by the broadcast industry in the early-mid 20th Century. The audio is recorded from the generator for 10 hours and then exported into a video editing program, Magix Vegas. A corresponding video is created with custom graphics I made in the video program. The visual is animated, then married to the audio and rendered out to the full length final video.
There are several noise colors to choose from.
