Comparing the 'tone' of ancient mammoth ivory, unbleached bone and plastic - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 29, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
I was swapping the nut in my acoustic guitar. The first material that I considered was hard, unbleached bone. The second is fossil/ancient mammoth ivory. I dropped both blanks on an wooden chair to compare the tone. 1st is the bone blank. IMO, it sounds dense, strong, clear, fullbodied. 2nd is the original nut. It sounds reedy to me. For sure brighter and thinner than the bone blank. Far fewer lows. Finally the mammoth ivory (or FMI). Sounds completely different to both: not many highs, chalky, rich, middy. Maybe too dull for my guitar.... What do you think?
