2120 S. Michigan Ave. is one of the most famous addresses in all of American pop history. Former home of the legendary Chess Records label from 1957 to 1967, 2120 housed the studio and recording company that begat legendary recordings by Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Etta James, Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Ramsey Lewis, Ahmad Jamal, Aretha Franklin and dozens of others.
The Rolling Stones immortalized the address in a 60′s blues instrumental entitled "2120 S. Michigan Avenue" on the 12×5 album, much of which was recorded at 2120. Chess executive Dick LaPalm remembers "There wasn't a blues recording made by Leonard or Phil Chess where Willie wasn't present in the studio or in the control room. In spite of whoever is credited as producer, when you get down to it, Willie was the guy. Very few Blues things were done without him, even after the bass went electric."
The building was purchased in 1993 by Marie Dixon, Willie's widow, and donated to house the Willie Dixon Blues Heaven Foundation. The former Chess Records office and studio at 2120 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago is officially recognized as a protected Chicago landmark. The Foundation restored the landmark structure to serve its music educational programs for children, students, Blues musicians and music enthusiasts.
