With an industry full of commercial glamour pop, pouting princesses, and what not, I can boldly give a standing ovation to Nicole who has proven that it's ok to be different and not follow the common trend. Her uniqueness alone is a force to be reckoned with. Far removed from the typical stereotype, Nicole has a marvelous voice and songs to match undiscovered veterans who have been playing for 40 years or so.
Raised on a diet of greats such as Thomas Whitfield, Herbie Hancock, The Hawkins Family, Quincy Jones, Richard Smallwood, Darryl Coley, The Clarks, Kim Burrell, The Winans, Incognito, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Fourplay, Lalah Hathaway, Anita Baker and many more, it is no wonder why Nicole is a household name that is to be remembered for centuries. With vocals that are a blend of such greats as the Clark sisters fused with Kim Burrell and spiced with Sarah Vaughan and semi Whitney Houston. Moreover, these are just point of references because Miss Nicole is in her own league as the lyrics and melodies on her debut suggest.
Take "By my side" for example, a wonderful wistful song full of hope and visionary "Take me I'm yours never let me go I just wanna feel you near, I don't care who knows."
Here is a person who is reminiscing on how love is meant to be or was meant to be. Then you have "Could It Be Love" a beautiful song, which I fell in love with at first listen and then "City lights" which has become my new favourite. Nicole's lyrics are as remarkable as her voice. There's so much maturity and depth here that it's hard to believe that she isn't yet out there writing for many artist who lack such depth and soul in their music. Nicole's voice is one to leave you breathless and could be compared to modern class acts such as Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott and Amel Larrieux. And her performance on every track has proven to be genius and full of soul and blues. Love Journal, Vol. 1 is a superb debut album that announces Nicole as major talent! With hardly any weak tracks on here, it's frightening to think what she could produce in the years to come.
