William Frederick Cody, later called Buffalo Bill, was born on February 26, 1846.

He died on January 10, 1917, at age 70 in Denver, Colorado. His grave may be visited on Lookout Mountain.

He was an American soldier, hunter of buffalo, and showman.

Late in his life he was famous as the organizer of elaborate circus-like shows with cowboy and Old West themes, touring in these shows throughout the United States.

Cummings wrote a first draft of his poem in 1917 when he learned from a newspaper that the celebrity Buffalo Bill had died.

Don't give the poet's name as "e.e. cummings" with lower case letters. He never wanted his name given that way.
