After two years of collaboration, Minneapolis Hip-Hop duo KILLSTREAK is preparing to release their debut album, Janus, on July 9th, 2013. Titled after the Roman god of duality and transitions, the record illuminates the contrasts of the college experience, where Socrates and tequila are mixed in equal parts each weekend. Taking sonic cues from Hudson Mohawke, Flying Lotus, Lazerbeak, and more, producer ICETEP marries EDM and Hip-Hop in a way few have ever managed successfully; negotiating territory from ethereal Hip-Hop interludes to subwoofer-shattering bass drops. Lyrically, rapper Tony the Scribe explores themes of morality, excess, and growth, all while name dropping deities and reveling in his hypocrisies. However, this is not a record that can be easily pigeonholed as backpacker rap; the album is unapologetically fun, with plenty of braggadocio and style for the whole family to enjoy. Janus features verses from Minneapolis rappers Guante, Chantz Erolin (of Audio Perm), and Otis Apollo, and was mixed by Jacob Grun and Ander Other at the renowned Sound Gallery in downtown Minneapolis. With Janus, KILLSTREAK is bursting into the bank of Hip-Hop with guns drawn, urgently demanding attention. This is a smash and grab, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
