The Chronicles of Bleedin Brain Music inc

It all started in April 1984 [4 years after the death Ian Curtis] When a mate [Adam Pringle of Mantissa fame] got pissed down the local pub we had just seen a local band X. We got back to his place and said to each other if they can do it so can we. Adam knew a bit of bass and I knew jack shit. So I picked up the bass and said Ill play bass and you can sing Adam. That was the start of things to come.

Luckily I was working with a drummer [Ross Pearson] and asked him if he would like to join a band. He said yes but Im sure he didnt know of our lack of experience as he was already an established musician around the local scene. Then we recruited "Larry" [Andrew O'Mara as a guitarist. Larry was also an established musician that had been playing around town with Blues Legend Jimi Hocking.

We hit the studio playing Gun Club, Bob Dylan covers. Ross [Drummer] got a pissed off because we knew nothing but he liked the vibe of the band and decided to persist with us. Im sure Larry probably felt the same but we had the enthusiasm. We started writing our own stuff because it was easier than doing covers as no one could hear any mistakes. After a two day speed binge we came up with the name "Compressed Heads" and so it was the start of the frenzy.

After about 6 months in the studio we finally had enough songs to gig with. The first gig we ever did was at the Esplanade Hotel in St kilda. Believe it or not it all went extremely well we play tight and the joint was rocking. By this time we had to acquire better equipment and thanks to Chris Voce [Guitars Plus] we were able to pay off our equipment on a weekly basis. We continued to do the inner city Melbourne scene.

Another 6 months had passed and we decided we should cut our first demo with producer Ray Luckhurst down at his studio which we also used to rehearse at. The demo was done on an analogue 8 track tape. The songs were all punky bluesy tunes

1 Cerebal Madness

2 Animal

3 Chevron Girl

4 Moscow Nuclear Fair

5 Anal Injected Death Syndrome [AIDS] a tribute to Rock Hudson

6 Pipes at Midnight

All songs were written by all members the band

Many other songs within this period were of substance but we couldnt afford any more studio time as we were all broke with raging drug habits and drank alot of bourbon.

At that time I was also doing a Radio Show [12am to 4am] on Saturday Nights on local radio station 3pbs fm with a mate Charlie Birch [RIP]. The show was called "Music from behind the beef curtain" We used to play such music as Throbbing Gristle,Gun Club to The Seekers and ABBA. Needless to say we used to get heaps of junkies and nutters ringing us up and saying What the fuck are you guys into. That was the fun of it we used to border on the ridiculous. But it all came to an abrupt end when got the sack because we said FUCK too many times and in those days it was still fairly conservative. I think we were a bit too alternative even for a progressive radio station.

The Titles of unrecorded songs

Freeway Whore

Neighbours

Smokin Cigarettes

Not long after that Larry left the band and we recruited Dave Pajek possibly one of the greatest guitar players Ive ever had the pleasure to play with. Man that dude could play he used to come up to me and say "Hey man there's aliens in my amp." Dave was an out there dude acid affected but boy did he have talent. Ross [drummer] decided he wanted to play rythym guitar. We had to recruit a drummer which was a hell of alot harder than we had anticipated. We even had Ted Nugent's ex drummer try out but we couldnt get any one to play fast and hard enough to our liking.

We had to borrow another drummer [Brian] from a pop band to fill in. Unfortunately he had a record deal with his band "The Ones" and couldnt commit to us. But years later I ran into him and you to say how much he liked doing gigs with us. By this time we were pretty damn Hardcore. Unfortunately with this line up we never got to record any songs cause by this time our drug habits were costing us too much and none of us ever had any money. But this was the period of Compressed Heads when we were at our musical peak. With song titles as

One mans poison

Gunshy

Two bit Bum

Dogs life

And reworkings of our older songs. But it all came to an abrupt end when myself and Adam had a falling out thus was the demise of Compressed Heads in 1987.

Adam went on to form Killing Time that eventually was named Mantissa after a few lineup changes. I went on jamming with Ross [drummer] and tried to form various bands but couldn't get the chemistry that was in Compressed Heads.

So for many years I just ended up playing guitar and jammin with various dudes but not really doing alot on a creative level just writing a bit but nothing to serious.

It wasnt untill about 1999 when a mate Dan Pearson [Drum and Bass] producer introduced me to computers and showed me how you could create music on them. That was the start of a whole new world to me. You could become a one band through using such software as Acid Pro and Fruity Loops. I totally embraced this technology at last all creative ideas I have always worked on could become real.

So then decided to a 3 year Multimedia course at the local college where I learnt how to build my own websites edit movies animation and artwork. The motivation behind this was that I didnt need to pay any one to do my artwork, filmclips etc. Thus I have been a one man show for the last 9 years.

This is where the Bleedin Brain story begins. Firstly I started out writing psuedo dance music but this was not very fulfiling I dont like doing happy music so I ditched that idea. Then I started doing Drum and Bass sort of stuff as this form of computer music seemed to go well with drugs I was taking but I got bored with that.

Thus I decided not to write in any particular genre I would just write what I felt like listening to.So I wrote anything from Industrial to Reggae or even a little bit of happy music. For years I wrote different genres gradually working with different production software Acid Pro, Fruity Loops, Cool Edit, Reason, Cubase, Logic Pro, Pro Tools etc

But as time went by I had discovered that most of these program have their limitations unless you are create your own stuff with real instruments.

So I went back to my beginings as that was playing Guitar,Bass and vocals with a midi controller. At first I found this very daunting as I never considered myself lyric writer or a vocalist but I forced myself to do it after much pain and anguish. Lyrics was always a hard thing for me as I was never much of a writer and I hated the sound of my own voice.[I even hearing my voice on the radio in the 80s]

With persistance I kept on going until I finaly started creating stuff that I could listen to. The first of these were

Saw you dead on the floor

Crucified

Zombie Smile

Tainted

Quicksand

Strolling

Greased Pig

Cave Dweller

These songs were all done with Midi Controller use Synth Vst intruments. But I was never 100% happy with them. I felt they need to be a bit more real.

Then came the next stage of journey and that was to use less synths and more band orientated song. The only computer driven instrument was the drum tracks because I dont own a drum kit and to record drums is too difficult in my small garage studio. So Id go out to the studio lay down a drum track and jam along with the drums with the guitar eventually perfecting the art of writing a song in the matter of hours. The more I did the easier it would come until I was able to write the music in the matter of hours and to my surprise the music started giving me the lyrics subconciously.

Next step was to put down the vocals so I went down the local Music shop and bought a vocal condenser mic and a tube preamp this enabled me to put down better vocals than before. Once I worked out the beauty of having a good mic it made the process a hell alot easier.Out of this came songs such as

Ill Slash your Throat

Rat Boy

Simon [Its Execution Time]

Swampland

Demon in the Head

Swingin

I Want to Kill You

See ya When ya Dead

Chainsaw Baby

Im out and ready for bigger and better things to come with the intention of getting the band thing happening and ready to do some serious touring.
