Excerpt from the all-AXS Jazz Fest Guide

Stemming from a long genealogy of Cajun musicians, accordionist Jimmy Breaux is royalty when it comes to the Cajun music scene. His great-grandfather was Auguste Breaux; his great aunt, Cléoma Falcon Breaux, sang and played on the first Cajun recording “Allons à Lafayette.” His grandfather, Amédée Breaux, made the first recording of “Jolie Blonde.” Breaux's parents and other family members were also musicians, and his stepfather, the late U.J. Meaux, was another inspiration. But, while Cajuns have great respect for their ancestors and their traditions, they judge people for who they are today, and by that measure, Jimmy Breaux is one of the top musicians anywhere.

He is the fourth generation of his family to play the genre and is best known as the accordion player for the Grammy Award-winning ambassadors of Cajun music, BeauSoleil. Having also released two stellar solo recordings ("Le Chemin Que T'as Pris," winner of the 1997 Le Cajun award, and "Un 'Tit Peu Plus Cajun"), Breaux has proved himself to be the master of the modern day accordion.

Though Breaux himself possesses a quiet presence, he is a classic powerhouse when it comes to his ability to play. Watching Breaux play is like an oxymoron - he can be still and quiet, yet his fingers move at lightning speed. His note-crammed riffs seem infinite with possibility and leave no doubt to why he is one of the genre’s greats. And don't mistake his low-key personality for boring...on stage he is anything but. His songs are filled with authentic creole soul and made for dancing. His action-packed, foot-stompin' rompin' beat can peel rubber in seconds flat.

Though it’s his show, Breaux demonstrates he can also play the supporting role, allowing fellow band-mates to have their turn at a few wicked rides. Additionally, his swampified accompaniment is perfect for the dance hall honky-tonk ambiance he creates outdoors. Listeners can expect that not only will Breaux be putting out some great music, but he'll also be putting on a great show.
