DESCRIPTION:
Black Rainbows - Stellar Prophecy (Full Album) With each new release, Roman outfit Black Rainbows continue to push themselves further and further into new ground between heavy psychedelia and fuzz rock. Each offering has been a marked step forward from the last. With Stellar Prophecy, their fifth LP — second through guitarist/vocalist Gabriele Fiori‘s Heavy Psych Sounds imprint — they have clearly figured out their sonic intent, but they brush past last year’s Hawkdope in terms of refining their melting pot of heavy ’70s vibes, lysergic space worship, and forward-driving fuzz. It’s been nine years since they issued their 2007 debut, Twilight of the Desert, and the strides they’ve made sonically and in their ambassadorship of bringing heavy rock to the people of Italy and bringing Italian heavy rock to the wider European scene, both on tour and in Fiori‘s work with the label, is simply unmatched.

Black Rainbows have demonstrated admirable creative will and energy, as well as a near-unmatched work ethic that shows itself in everything they do, including the quick turnaround between Hawkdope and this new collection. Stellar Prophecy comprises seven tracks and just under 44 vinyl-ready minutes of what has particularly over the last four years become their brand of upbeat, full-thrust heavy psych rock, still working from root influences like Nebula and Hawkwind, but having long since developed their own attitude and take on those influences.

The production on this release is just perfect. The drums lurk just under the surface of the mix, and are brilliantly solid and warm. The guitars and bass are like layers of an onion, stacked upon one another to create a larger mass that when coupled with the swirling, psychedelic lead lines and synths create an almost globe of trippy sound all the way around your brain. The vocals add to this effect and are creatively panned with heaps of delay, again layered to what seems like infinity. The tracks are ordered brilliantly and just as you begin to drift off in your own little world, accompanied by the psychedelic almost meditational-like longer tracks, you’re pulled back into reality with huge catchy riffs. The album itself is around fourty-four minutes long but it feels like half that and you’ll find yourself spinning this one over and over again.

Electrify and Woman are both tracks which get you into the mood, provide you with and introduction to the band’s sound and both rock out in their own way. What they don’t do is have the intensity of ‘Golden Widow’. This is a huge, sprawling and magnificent psych-blues-rock track which locks you into its groove early on and does not let go until the very end. This is Black Rainbows at their very best. This intensity is kept up with the, much shorter, Evil Snake. The heaviest track on the album, this is a real ‘rock out with your cock out’ track which has all you need in about three and a half minutes to satisfy even the most hard to please rock fan. The riffs are immense, the drums huge and the bass solid and throbbing. After that Time To Die is anthemic and bluesy, while Keep The Secret will have you nodding your head remembering the great rock bands of yore. The album ends on a high with The Travel, a journey into space rock that is closest to the band’s regular Hawkwind credentials.

Stellar Prophecy is another superb album to add to your Black Rainbows collection. The band has changed their sound in so many different ways on this album as they have a more epic feel to their music. Everything about this album oozes class. What more do you expect from one of Italy’s finest Psych/Stoner Metal bands. Stellar Prophecy could be the bands most defining album to date. Stellar Prophecy is another perfect slice of sun-drenched, desert fuzz goodness. If Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, Wolfmother and Hawkwind all drove together down a dusty highway, this would be in the tape deck. To be blunt about it, Stellar Prophecy is the most accomplished Black Rainbows yet. As they continue to mature, their work only becomes more and more satisfying.
