The guitar story behind ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons goes back as far as Christmas Eve 1963, when Santa stopped by with two amazing presents that marked a turning point in his life: a Gibson Melody Maker and a tiny Fender Champ Amplifier. Billy began hours of practice trying to learn the guitar licks he heard on Little Richard, Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed records. The stars aligned for Gibbons in June, 1968, when his earlier band – The Moving Sidewalks – opened for Jimi Hendrix’s Texas tour. Focus On Rock’s Carrie Cooper has the story.
