We were supposed to be more than we are. I wrote this song about five years ago, it was one of those songs that just kind of happened. With this song, it wasn't like I sat down and labored to write a song, it was more like a longing for something more in this world spilled out of me as a song. As a songwriter you always treasure those magical moments when songs "just happen."

We were supposed to be more than we are...for years that was probably the most optimistic sentence I could come up with about my ambivalent relationship toward surviving in this world...a longing for change. But this song was more than just a longing, it was a deep seated plea for us all to just let go, breathe, and see that we are free if we choose to be. "Embrace a world that's free of fear."

I've always felt that humanity was supposed to be more than capitalism and governments...more than greed and war. I felt that, through fear, we've blinded ourselves from our true nature, and all the greed, all the wars, are mistakes of confused and lost souls that can see only the small differences between themselves and others..and we have somehow become blind to our vast, glaring similarities.

I still think that we are supposed to be more than we are...but now I see that we are becoming more than we were. Everything is changing. It's an amazing and beautiful time to be alive on this planet. I have met many absolutely amazing and beautiful people over the past year of my life...and I look forward to meeting many, many, many more amazing and beautiful people in the coming year.

This is the oldest of the songs I've recorded for "Illuminated Heart," but it also feels like the perfect introduction to the album. So here it is. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. All of my love to you. May your heart always be illuminated...and don't forget to breathe. -Ben
