Lyrics:
The night is cold and growing dim
There’s still no getting through to him
And you can’t explain what brought you out here to begin with
You had to leave the kids alone
To try to bring their father home
And you can’t explain what brought you out here to begin with
The lights are out on Whiskey Island
But through the dark you wave him clear
Out on the rocks against your judgment
A wildcat needs a volunteer
The same excuse, the old assignment
You take that hand and pull him near
Take the one-lane road back to the tribe
Driven by a faith you can’t describe
In your foolish heart and the troubled mind it fell in love with
Notes:
This song is played in an open tuning: E-A-E-G#-B-E; it's equivalent to a D-G-D-F#-A-D tuning with capo at 2. That's probably the better way to do it (fewer broken strings and less tension on the neck) unless you're a slide player (in which case you might want the higher tension). But I keep it up at E because the old Takamine in this video doesn't hold a tune in D.
I prefer this tuning to the standard open E because leaving the A string alone facilitates working the IV into the chord progression. This is the same tuning I use for "Happy Ending" and "Sown Garden," among others.
