Tech Notes

There are more extensive tech notes regarding the Zoom Q4 with the "Diary of a Broken Heart" video by Flight of Fire that was uploaded prior to this one. The lighting at The Loft (which literally an an industrial loft converted to a music practice space and occasional music showcase) is often composed of a couple of lamps at the corners and strings of Christmas lights, which was basically the case here. So there was tons of chroma noise in the video, even more so than the with the Flight of Fire video. For the video edit I used Avidemux 2.5 and this list of filters: Sharpen, Contrast, Luma equalizer, MPlayer eq2, FluxSmooth, Median, Mplayer hqdn3d, Sharpen, and MSharpen.

The FluxSmooth and Median filters took care of most of the blatent chroma noise, while the Mplayer hqdn3d filter was used to deal with the remaining higher frequency noise and was mostly optional since this tends to be minimized on YouTube. In addition to Avidemux (yes, I know there is a newer version, but that doesn't have as many built-in filters), I also often use VirtualDub, another freebie editor, and Video Enhancer, which is not free but cheap, and which allows you to use VirtualDub filters in multitheaded mode to greatly speed up processing (although without a preview mode). Video enhancer also has built-in, sophisticated enhancement filter very useful for enlarging videos while maintaining, if no enhancing perceived sharpness and detail.
