ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS have quietly spent the last 20+ years becoming legends of the trans-Atlantic underground alongside peers such as Vibracathedral Orchestra, Sunburned Hand of the Man and Pelt. Ashtray Navigations began in Yorkshire as Phil Todd’s solo project before expanding into various band configurations, mostly peopled by Phil and Melanie Delaney in later years. Perhaps yet to be acclaimed for the great guitarist he is, Todd blends psychedelia, exotica, drone, vintage synth waves and, increasingly, a very English electronica and Ashtray Navigations continue to be ridiculously prolific (check the 54 album deal available on Bandcamp). Latterly receiving due plaudits via large pieces in The Wire and elsewhere, Todd and his Navigations have been a key ingredient in the UK underground for 20 years so if you haven’t yet, its definitely time to tune in.
