Ouseley’s “How long wilt thou forget me”: Brecon Cathedral 1975 (David Gedge) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 17, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
From a live BBC broadcast from Brecon Cathedral, 26 February 1975, with the choir of Brecon Cathedral, directed by David Gedge. Assistant organist: Hazel Davies.

Baronet Sir Frederick Arthur Gore Ouseley (1825-1889) was Precentor at Hereford Cathedral and Professor of Music at Oxford University, although his most enduring memorial was the College of St Michael’s at Tenbury, which he founded in 1856. He had attempted a similar project during his curacy at St Barnabas Pimlico, but met with vociferous opposition in the shape of the 'no popery' riots and this caused him to seek a calmer venue in the Worcestershire countryside. (St Michael’s Tenbury closed in 1985.)

The text of “How long wilt thou forget me” is taken from Psalm 13:

How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? For ever? How long shall I seek counsel in my soul, and be so vexed in my heart? How long shall mine enemies triumph over me? Consider, and hear me, O Lord my God; lighten mine eyes, that I sleep not in death.
