given that she is resident at one of leeds' foremost techno nights -- and is often charged with warm-up duties -- it makes perfect sense that annie errez produces the music she does. it's stripped and moody, built on well chiselled grooves and is designed to get you, and keep you, dancing. of the three originals she serves up for the burgeoning saints & sonnets imprint, the first is possibly the best: 'deeper knowledge' has a hollowed out bassline repeating little phrases over and over as train track perc' and a rubbery underside roll and roll and roll.
a close second is 'marching', whose underground quality-style sheet metal snares do exactly that above mournful pads and a more corrugated kick drum pattern. shimmering hi hats and excitable female yelps help fill in the detail and there's some genuine machine soul in the melodies that rise and rise from the mid point. despite his considerable standing, mr g's remix in no way shames anything here, instead it does what the man does best -- growls and grunts though a thick technoid ambiance. the final errez original 'wait for you' deals in the same grainy and fad free production, but for the way it is trapped in the same steely and unresolved loops doesn't quite pique the interest as much as the other two. still, a more than decent solo debut.
