'Selkie' was born out of a special request from Mary Anne Hobbs for Anna to record a live improvisation as part of BBC Radio 6 Music's 2022 Art is Everywhere event, which this year celebrated how the natural world can inspire creativity.

"Mary Anne invited me to go down to the beach near my house in Kent to produce a new piece of music. Although I'd written a whole album – Sea Souls – about my relationship with the sea, I'd never actually recorded music on the shoreline. So I brought my viola and violin down to the water, and I recorded some improvised lines, just responding to the sounds of the sea. I then took it all back to the studio, and I created a whole new piece with one of my improvised viola lines as its backbone. I hope it transports you down to the sea for a few minutes." – Anna Phoebe
