His work, whilst classical in form, is romantic in temper and the most pronounced form of 19th century German Romanticism. The son of a doublebass player in the theatres of Hamburg, he received a through musical training and initially supported himself by playing piano in dance-halls and cafes. He held a position at court for four years. moved to switzerland and finallt to Vienne where he spent the remaining thirty five years of his life. Academic Festival Overture, Op.80 written in 1880 is based on Viennese ztudent drinking songs. Symphony No.1 in C minor; Op.68 was long in gestation, taking twenty-one years to complete, from 1855-76. He only spent a year on each of his later three symphonies; 1877 No.2 in D, Op.73, 1883 No.3 in F. Op.90 and 1884 No.4 in E minor, Op.98
