Roger Miller (MOB) "To Chance" - Video
PUBLISHED:  Nov 23, 2008
DESCRIPTION:
This is a video piece that I dreamed up one day when Roger Miller (Mission of Burma & Alloy Orchestra) was in Lawrence, KS with his then band "No Man" in 1991. It is part of a series of video pieces that I was working on at the time called "Views in Life" which were all based on artist's that I admired at the time.

Roger's previous tour was for his "Maximum Electric Piano" and I really enjoyed that show. Since he was in town, I asked if he would let me shot this video piece and he was open to the idea. It was shot in Liberty Hall during the day before his performance in the evening, my concepts for the video were that since very few people had heard his "Maximum Electric Piano" (at least in the midwest) that it was fitting for him to be seen performing in an empty concert hall. The second concept was that since his piano work is based on the compositions of John Cage, that I would do a take off on that by doing a visual cutup of him playing the piano (also because William Burroughs lived in Lawrence at the time). Another reason for the visual cut-up format, is that I had a limited amount of time and only one camera, so this is all in camera editing with me running around the hall doing setups every fews seconds as Roger played. The title has a triple meaning in that my shooting was left to chance, the piece was inspired by the works of John Cage (who's work is based on chance) and Roger had named his son Chance.
