Music Connection Magazine Review 11/25/2005 3:25:59

Alicia Marie is in November Issue of Music Connection Magazine:

Alicia Marie [The Cat Club - West Hollywood]

Material: Alicia Marie's repertoire consists of well-written pop ballads performed in mostly minor keys. The tunes have thunderous chords coupled with melancholy, introspective lyrics themed in love's loss, pain and regret. Some examples are "Crying on the Inside," and "The Seven Stages of Grief." The melodic structures are very well crafted, and are almost a cross between the work of songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Carole King.

Musicianship: Marie's keyboard playing is dramatic and striking. She has a powerful voice and an octave range full enough to carry the vocals. She does have a slight tendency to over sing, thus losing some of her vocal control during the songs climaxes. She always retains her key, but her tone can go a little bit shrill in these places. Marie may want to work on this aspect before showcasing.

Performance: This intimate, one-woman performance transformed the Cat Club into a lounge setting. "I need a band," Alicia Marie quipped during the second tune, but she really didn't; her stage presence was more than adequate, and the passion she conveyed in her songs kept her audience spellbound. She had a decent crowd for a weeknight and the fact that she was playing sad songs and still riveted them was definitely a feather in her cap. Marie ended her set to a standing ovation, and then performed a dirgey version of Prince's "When Doves Cry" as her encore.

Summary: Alicia Marie is not a happy-go-lucky pop diva. Her songs are starkly real and yank at your reserve, especially if you've had your heart broken. This is a testament to this artist's skill as a songwriter. Good art imitates life, and Alicia Marie makes good art.
