"Over the first half of 2016 I composed a piece for three bassoons called Intraversing, in which the very acoustic character of the bassoon itself becomes a terrain navigated and explored by the three voices.
Whilst Intraversing sees the bassoon search within itself, in turn, Extraversing finds the bassoon reflecting this identity outwards into the more complex, less stable, and potentially hostile environment of the ensemble. Here the bassoon’s spectral and gestural fabric is supported, magnified, reflected, blurred and challenged by the other surrounding voices, whose stance shifts between states of sympathy and antagonism.
The work draws not just upon the idea of soloist amongst accompanying voices but, more broadly, the space for an instrument’s individual identity within that of the group, the relationship across this divide becoming the very source of dynamism throughout the composition.
Extraversing is dedicated to the bassoonist Joost Bosdijk."
