DESCRIPTION:
On Saturday October 24th, leading African women personalities based in Johannesburg organized a first-of-its-kind event at Johannesburg’s historical Women’s jail, Constitutional Hill to promote awareness of breast cancer.

What a colourful event: Eminent speakers, great food, exceptional cultural dances, and outstanding outfits from the rest of Africa.

The chairperson of Diaspora African Women Renaissance (DAWR), the organisation, Ugandan doctor, Ikatekeit Okonera, said: “We need to be together and we need to act now. There are at least 2 million documented women from the rest of Africa living in South Africa. It’s therefore our role as woment to continue to support each other starting now”.

Speaking at the event, H.E Julius Moto, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Southern Africa encouraged members present to ensure that they checked on their health regularly.

The cancer event is one of the many events organised by DAWR. DAWR is a membership organisation that welcomes all – women and men – to join. More details are available on www.dawr.org.za

The committee includes a diverse set of women from across Africa who volunteer their skills to support the many women and girls living in SA.
