When my husband and I were first married, he was stationed with the Navy at Jacksonville, FL. I didn't have any family in the area, so when he'd be away on deployment, I'd pack a cooler with a lunch and soft drinks, and road trip down A1A to St. Augustine Beach. It's a beautiful drive. The highway runs right next to the Atlantic Ocean, and I never forget how much I loved those drives. I wanted to capture some of that freedom and excitement, so I tried to capture it in A1A (Settin' Myself Free).

My co-producer Troy and I had a lot of fun recording the percussion parts for this song. We wanted to have a little fun with it, so we tried out all kinds of things we could find- martini glasses, silverware, and an actual cooler.

Most of the song was recorded in Houston, TX. Solveig Whittle recorded her harmony vocals at her partner Stevie Adamek's recording studio. I'm pretty sure Kira Small and Jana Pochop recording their parts in Houston, too, but they could have recorded them in Nashville and Austin, respectively.

We filmed the music video near my sister's house in Slidell, LA. Most of the musicians were able to come in for the filming. Unfortunately, Hamilton Loomis (stand-up bass) and Frank DeBretti couldn't make it. We didn't have a lead guitarist to fill in for Frank, but Darren Phipps was kind enough to sit in for Hamilton. Also, that's my daughter Rachel playing the part of the protagonist. Rachel had to refresh her stick stick driving skills in order to drive my sister's car for the video. The interior scenes were also filmed at my niece's house in metro New Orleans, near the racetrack. It was really a family affair for this one!
