„What Boundaries?!“, das gemeinsame Projekt des Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, der Lusubilo Band aus Karonga und traditionellen Musikern aus Nsanje, lässt geografische und mentale Grenzen hinter sich.
Die engagierte und erstmalige Kooperation von Musikern beider Länder vereint afrikanische und europäische Stilmittel. Afropop und Jazz treffen auf Electronica-Ästhetik, ursprüngliche Musik Malawis auf zeitgenössische europäische Strukturen. Wesentlich fur "What Boundaries?!" ist der Austausch von Ideen und Talenten auf Augenhöhe.
Während eines dreiwöchigen Arbeitsprozesses im August in Malawi schrieben die Musiker neue Stucke und kreierten eine unkonventionelle Performance, die Besonderheiten der Kulturen verbindet. Überdies zeigen die Musiker aus Nsanje Facetten einer mündlich überlieferten Musik, die bislang in Deutschland noch nicht zu hören war.

Nach vier Auffuhrungen von „What Boundaries?!“ in Malawi im August 2016 ist das insgesamt 31 Musikerinnen und Musiker umfassende Orchester am 27.10. beim Tonlagen Festival Dresden-Hellerau und am 29. Oktober im Radialsystem V Berlin erstmals in Europa zu sehen.
Vor dem Konzert wird ein rund 40-minütiger, atmosphärischer Film gezeigt, der in kunstvoll komponierten Bildern vom Arbeitsprozess und den Auftritten der Musiker in Malawi erzählt.



“What Boundaries?!”, the forthcoming collaboration between Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra and the Lusubilo Band and musicians from the Nsanje tribe, marks the first cooperation of this kind between Malawi and Germany. The aim of “What Boundaries?!” is to blend and combine Malawi’s traditional and Afro-Pop music with international jazz, current electronic music as well as elements of contemporary European music.
Hailing from the Music Centre of Lusubilo in Karonga, Malawi, the Lusubilo Band is comprised of 10 young musicians. An award winning group, voted “Best Band” at the 2014 Musicians Union of Malawi Awards (MUMA), “the Lusubilo Band proved that they are one of the bands of the future.” the Daily Times Malawi
They are joined by a group of traditional musicians from Nsanje, who will contribute traditional Malawian techniques and instruments (e.g. ulimbas) to the sessions. Their archaic and beautiful music consisting of vivid, complex rhythms and colorful microtonal melodic patterns will be a focal point in this collaboration.

“What Boundaries?!” is all about exploring musical and cultural boundaries – by writing and creating together: After rehearsing together for two weeks in Karonga, Malawi, the three groups played four concerts in Malawi and are now heading to play in Germany this fall.
